Bunny and Bear

Bear and Bunny were rescued about 2 weeks ago and they were approximately six weeks old. They are still getting used to eating solid food. They are a joy basically. These two little dudes have been keeping me very busy. I have been trying to capture them with my camera but they are so fast! I is difficult to take a picture of a fast black cat!

Little Bear is getting his tummy tickled in this picture.

Miss Bunny is what I call a Rosemary Wells cat. She is a Tortie with lovely ginger smudges all over her face. The more she grows her patches lighten and her expressions are easier to see. Is she not cute?

I love looking at deer in the winter. It seems to be the only time I can catch them with my camera. They are so busy foraging for food they have little interest in noisy humans.

Skating!

Wow it has been a long cold winter at the farm. The skating has been incredible! All the rain has flooded out our field resulting about a six acre natural skating rink! A long skate followed by painting in front of a nice hot fire is certainly a lovely way of keep the chill out.

I have always wanted to successfully grow a big mess of sunflowers in the veggie garden. This year I got my wish. I planted an entire wheel barrel of seed in the spring and just look at the results! Time to take some reference photos.

I have been working hear and there in my studio lately. The rain has forced me to stop my pursuits in the vegetable garden. When it rains I paint!

Below is a sneak peek of one of the many pieces I have been working on this week. At Christmas I painted a funny little painting for John of all of our cats. (Above) This series is exploring that little burst of creativity. The colour pallet is very different and the cats are quite stylized. Unfortunately John's painting is too big for my scanner! This is what happens when I just paint without a plan. I end up with something great that is hard to reproduce! In any case I am working on a series to be used for a variety of things like cards, buttons and I am hoping bookplates! I will also have some large prints too. I am hoping all of my lovely customers will give me a little feedback here of my blog. I welcome comments please do not hesitate to leave them. Cheers! I hope everyone is enjoying the sun!

Below is a painting in progress. Can see what is missing? These cats don't have any whiskers! This style takes time. I paint a little and then glaze. In person these acrylics almost look like oils.

Spring is almost here!

The birds woke me up this morning! I think spring is just around the corner. There are little signs everywhere. The gardens and fields are starting to green up. The barn cats are zooming around and acting mighty frisky. The people of Hastings county are tapping their maples for sap and the smell of manure is in the air.

Yes that's right the season of maple syrup mud has begun! It is time to dig out my trusty rubber boots and get some exercise. Walks in the woods are lovely when I don't lose my shoes to thick soupy mud. I can deal with a little rain but I am praying for sunshine. I hope I can sneak in some sketching trips in before the black flies start emerging. Time to tune up my bicycle! Happy spring everyone wherever you hail from!

How Tara Creates A Custom Portrait Of Your Pet

Stage 1 - Getting to know your Cat and designing your painting

I begin every painting with lots of reference of my subject. Having a variety of pictures with different poses helps me see and understand all of your cats markings. These are pictures of Thomas. Thomas was one of my models for that stripy cat. I am now using him again to aid me with the colouring of the kitty in my current painting.

It can be challenging to capture those essential images. Sometimes setting up toys and baskets are the only solution. I am guilty of resorting to dumping a bunch of catnip on the floor to entice a camera shy cat. Stoned kitties can sit very still after the zing of catnip has worn off!

This is me holding Thomas. He is loving the hug and I managed to get a really great picture of his face too! The picture below is a little bury and over exposed but, his carmel belly is on display. This picture is very helpful.

After we have discussed what you have in mind and we have gathered a lovely bunch of reference shots I begin working. I will produce some loose sketches and we play around with some options.

Stage Two - Designing A Linear

This particular painting is based on some previous paintings I already have on display in my etsy shop, gingercatpress. In this case the design is straightforward. My client simply showed me what they loved in my shop.

Here are the two little paintings from my shop that this portrait is based on. The kitty on the left was painted on a 6.00 inch x 4.00 inch canvas board. The white cat was originally painted on tiny 5.00 inch x 3.50 inch cotton canvas.

They want lots of special details so it was decided that it would be a much larger original than these little examples. This Custom original will be 10.00 inches x 8.00 inches. I will be painting in acrylic on a stretched cotton canvas. My client loved the clouds and grass. We talked about adding some more fun elements that would add little spots of bright colour. I suggested dragonflies or butterflies. It was decided that the cat would be a taupe grey tabby surrounded by butterflies! Oh this will be so much fun to paint!

The Finished Linear

This is the finished linear. It is exactly 10 inches X 8 inches and a perfect visual map for me to refer back to while I start the under painting on the canvas. I will now sketch this drawing on to a canvas that has been painted in a neutral base colour.

Stage 3 - The finished Art

The painting is always a wee bit different. You may notice little subtle things. Sometimes the image will tighten up. A linear usually is very loose and free looking. This naturally occurs in all of my work.

The Under Painting

When I am creating a larger piece of art I will often do an under painting before I breakout the sexy colours. This allows me to work out all the light and dark areas. An under painting also gives a depth and richness to the surface colours. In this particular painting my under painting's palette has Payne's grey (deep rich blue grey), neutral gray, cerulean blue and a warm white. My scanner has captured the image pretty well. In life the painting looks more like a tinted black and white photo. Blue is difficult colour to reproduce on the screen!

The Finished Painting

Well there he is all finished. Now I will glaze this guy until he sparkles!

Remembering Tig and Ginger

We lost a very special boy this winter to kidney disease. Lately whenever I sit down to paint he appears. This post is for Tigger. He was a constant source of inspiration for my painting and the reason I started painting pussycats in the first place. My sweet baby is always close by.

We had such a spot of bad luck this winter. My sweet Ginger left us too. She was an amazing little cat. Plagued with health problems from birth. She was born with a rare liver shunt and she rallied for 3 good years. This is quite amazing really. Cats with liver shunts rarely live past a year. In any case she was a little cat that brought big moments of joy into our house. I will always love you Ginger.

Wow I cannot believe how much snow we have had! March 2 and we have drifts that are 5ft!!

Oh well...

A little comic relief. My family has a cure for the winter blues. SQUIRRELS!!! What will a squirrel do for a gourmet nut? Anything! John has tamed and trained a whole family of furry little guys. They knock on the window for breakfast!! Can you believe that?

This is sweet little Emillio. He is a new little character I have been playing around with. He is coming to my etsy shop soon! I am developing wee little note cards with his curious little face. Emillio was inspired by a feral kitten I rescued last fall. He is happily living with his new mommy in Toronto.

I have never seen a feral kitten take to people like Emillio!

A total success story. Just look at that little face.

Here is one of my new originals from my first series of original aceo art cards. This collection was Inspired by my barn cats.

I am looking forward to a cosy Valentine's Day with my babies in the studio. Tigger and Oscar love to watch me paint. It has been such a long cold winter at farm this year. This winter I have been snowed in 4 times! A record to be sure. I don't mind though it just gives me the perfect excuse to spend more time painting!

This is my sweet baby Ginger when she was about 10 weeks old!
